Sunny Gupta is sharing details about his secretive Bellevue startup Apptio, which the serial entrepreneur says could change the way corporations think about their IT spending. Gupta, who previously worked in executive roles at iConclude (sold to Opsware) and Performant (sold to Mercury Interactive), says Apptio is attempting to help companies get a better handle on IT expenses, everything from laptops to data centers.

Apptio, a startup partly funded by Netscape co-founder Marc Andreessen, came out of stealth mode Monday to push its SaaS (software-as-a-service) offering meant to help IT shops track exactly how much their assets cost the business.

Bellevue-based Apptio said today that it has officially launched the firm and emerged from stealth mode. The startup, which is venture backed by Greylock Partners, Madrona Venture Group, Marc Andreessen, Ben Horowitz, Ignition Ventures and Shasta Ventures, said that it will provide an on-demand offering for giving enterprises visibility into the cost of IT product and services. The company said its products will bring greater transparency to IT to help minimize IT costs and maximize IT business value.
